Classes and types of medical equipment
EQUIPMENT CLASS {I, II, III}
EQUIPMENT CLASS I
has a protective earth, insulation between live parts and condusives parts
large fault currents from mains part will go earth (protective earth conductor) this will let fuse in the mains circuit disconnect equipment from supply
Equipment should have fuses at the equipment end to lead both the live and neutral conductors
Will gives supplementary protection is operative
Symbol in earth equipment
EQUIPMENT CLASS II
A protection method against electric
shock by double insulation
or reinforced insulation
Double insulation
Protection by first layer of insulation
If in double insulation fail, supplementary protection will provided
Providing second layer of insulation
Reinforced insulation
A single layer insulation which same degree as second layer insulation
This class equipment should be fused at the equipment end of supply lead either mains conductor or both conductors
SYMBOL OF CLASS II EQUIPMENT
EQUIPMENT CLASS III
A protection against electric shock relies on facts no voltages higher than safety extra low voltage (SELV) are present
SELV - relevant standard as a voltage not exceeding 25V ac or 60V dc
SELV transformer should be tested with the transformer as class I or class II equipment as appropriate.
SYMBOL OF CLASS III EQUIPMENT
EQUIPMENT TYPES
A method of protection against electric shock
TYPE BF
As type B but with isolated or floating (F - type) applied part or parts.
TYPE CF
Equipment providing a higher degree of protection against electric shock than type BF, particularly with regard to allowable leakage currents, and having floating applied parts.
TYPE B
Equipment providing a particular degree of protection against electric shock, particularly regarding allowable leakage currents and reliability of the protective earth connection (if present).
