metabolism

metabolism

all chemical reaction in the body

living things need to be making new molecules for growth or replace old cells

the raw materials for molecules in in the food that we eat (digestion)

not how much food you can eat of how fast it can break down.

metabolism is the sum of all the reactions happening in a cell or an organism, in which molecules are made or broken down

the 5 reactions in metabolism

  1. the conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose
  1. making lipids
  1. making proteins
  1. respiration

in plants, glucose and nitrates used to make proteins

formation of molecules

glucose

glycogen in animals

starch or cellulose in plants

lipids

storage of fat and oils

used as long term energy storage and insulation

(fats)

proteins

amino acids are joined to make new proteins

used for growth and repair

urea

breakdown of excess amino acids

broken down in the liver

kidneys remove urea

respiration

glucose is oxidised into carbon dixoide and water

energy is released
