It's commonplace in Taiwan for children to be cared for by their grandparents while their parents live and work in another city. In some cases, the city is on the other side of the island, or even in China. Often, the children only see their parents on weekends and holidays because of the parents' hectic work schedule. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan and offers the most opportunities for those is search of work. So a common phrase that I hear from children is "My mom and dad live in Taipei." And because Taipei is extremely expensive to live in, parents send their children to their grandparents where everyday life is more affordable.
This can be difficult at times for students, because some children barely know their parents. In some cases, their parents are strangers to them. There are some instances where I actually spend more time with the child in class than their parents do with them at home.
