Coral Reef Biomes - Coggle Diagram
Coral Reef Biomes
Main Characteristics/Traits
Located between latitudes 25N and 25S
Majority are located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans
Consists of calcium carbonate secreted by coral polyps
Support 1/4 of all marine fish species
Warm, shallow water
Symbiotic Relationships
Clownfish and sea anemones
Mutual protection
Dinoflagellates and coral
Provide coral with oxygen and sugars in return for protection
Mangroves and coral reefs
Coral reefs provide protection from waves and benefit from the mangroves by lessening shoreline erosion (prevent sediment from entering water)
Corals
Keystone species
Offspring by fragmentation
Complex ecosystem
Fish adaptations
Thinner bodies to fit through coral openings
Pectoral and pelvic fins switched places
Optimal manoeuvrability
Bright coloring for camouflage
Specialized mouth, jaws, and teeth
Coral Bleaching
Adaptations to survive this problem:
Produce fluorescent pigmentation
Change in water temperature
Coral gets stressed
Expels dinoflagellates (and its color with it)
