Disturbed eating behaviors in adolescents and emerging adults with type 1 diabetes
Introduction
DEB = Disturbed eating behaviour
Commonly found in youth with type 1 diabetes
Relates with risk for complications, mordibity and mortality
Unhealthy eating habits, e.g skipping meals, binge eating
Dietary restraints based on glucose regulation and also social pressure to have "perfect body" can contribute to developing DEB
There are limited studies about DEB and depressive symptoms
Especially when talking about youth patients!
This study aimed to increase knowledge about DEB
Results
There were many individual differences
Prosentual results
7,3% had DEB decreased over time
8 % had DEB increasing over time
19 % of the patients had persistent DEB
The rest of the participants had low scores
DEB was related to increases in depressive symptoms
Conclusion
DEB can occur despite age and stage in the illness
Previous study showed that during adolescence DEB was more common
Especially with patients in emerging adulthood
Patients with higher BMI is related to DEB
Body dissatisfaction may correlate with DEB
Females are more prone to DEB!
Future research is needed to examine DEB and glycemic control
Future studies should be carried out in the longer term
Study was quite "narrow" as it's participants were only from the Belgian Diabetes Registry
The role of these findings can help assessing DEB and other eating disorders in youth patients
Methods
Data was gathered from Belgian Diabetes Registry
Ethical approval was granted
Questionnaires were send to youth patients with diabetes 1
Researchers used a diabetes-specific measure (the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey) to address relevant objectives
DEB, self-management, diabetes distress, depressive symptoms, glycemic control
Data was gathered five times during one year
