Recalls the time when Miss Kenton and his father joined the Darlington Hall about the same time. Miss Kenton called Stevens's father by his name"Williams" instead of "Mr Stevens senior" which makes Stevens feels bad because he thinks she doesn't show the respect to his father, a great butler. The dustpans and Chinaman later show Stevens that his father is getting old and his abilities are not what they used to be.

Stevens recalls creating a lot of chaos in the kitchen on the day Miss Kenton was to quit her job and get married in order to keep her around

Stevens runs away from his heart and so all his life and miss Kenton because he didn't show his heart to Miss Ken Dunn.

Miss Kenton tries to get Stevens to express his true feelings, but Stevens is afraid to admit his feelings for Miss Kenton. Miss Kenton decides to start a completely different life and leave Darlington Hall and Stevens.(crying)

stay in the attic room belongs to Mr and Mrs Taylor because the car ran out of petrol (Tavistock, local agricultural fair, no room)
Stevens stand on the high hill in the fog, he may feel confused about his life, about his trip. he has no idea where he is and where he can go. the reason he decided to have this trip is miss Kenton, he likes miss Kenton. she is just like the light in the fog.
Miss Kenton wants to find out what book Stevens is reading (sentimental romance) improve the English language level
Stevens think the new maid called Lisa is not suitable to work in the darlington hall but miss kenton thinks sheisvery. potential and trains Lisa to be a good maid by herself but Lisa leave with the second footman
Miss Kenton wants to start a family and not do as good as before in the job and "a little moody of late"。Her aunt died.
Two Jewish maids were fired because the influence of the "blackshirts" by Oswald Mosley and Mrs Barnet. Lord Darlington made the decision and Miss Kenton is very angry about this and want to resign her job.
