Inspector - Coggle Diagram
Inspector
Very powerful and authoritative
Stage direction [We hear a sharp ring of a front door bell. BIRLING stops to listen]
Inspector is the only one that can cut mr Birling off
"Sharp ring" indicates a new authority figure, Mr Birling is no longer the most powerful person
increases tension in scene
"need not be a big man"
Doesn't need superficial things to be authoritative, naturally very powerful - unlike Mr Birling, doing everything for appearances
"creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness"
triplet+use of commas creates slow pace - always in control, build tension
"a man in his fifties" :older_man::skin-tone-2:
Like Birling - he's someone who can challenge Birling
proves that old people can be open minded
[interposes himself between them and the photograph]
Reminds us who's in power/control
Despite British stiff upper lip, he still manages to quickly dismantle the family + get under their skin
Many chaos-y adverbs, even before he enters - [uneasy], [sharply], [defiantly] - building up to his arrival
Mr Birling gets [impatient] almost immediately
Smart, sarcastic, humourous
"I'd like some information, if you don't mind, Mr Birling"
Always has a condescending tone
"Goole. G – double O – L – E."
Belittling, talking down to him
Like talking to a preschooler
Always calm and collected
Very few stage directions for his speech
Poker face, emotionless
Only ones are "dryly", "slowly"...etc
But uses very emotive language when talking about Eva Smith story
manipulative
Shows the photo to one person at a time in a specific order
Questions specific people at certain times - chronological order
Sheila - "You knew it was me all the time, didn't you?"
Approaches different characters differently, eg uses ethos on Sheila
