- - - - Umbrella body that represents and campaigns on behalf of trade union members in Ireland. Coordination body of 50 unions. Represent decisions on behalf of trade unions in front of government bodies or other decision making bodies. Give advice of joining a trade union.
    - - Provide feedback to the union on the views of the members, gives advice to members and support on workplace issues eg sick leave, helps resolve disputes between employers and employees eg introduction of new working hours and recruit new members for the union
  - - - Employers: Faster negotiation- its faster for employers to negotiate with the shop steward rather than the individuals or groups of employees . tis saves the business time and money
      - Introducing Change- It can be easier for the employer to introduce new technology- The shop steward can explain to the employees why these changes are needed
      - Improved Health and Safety- employees can inform the shop steward of their health and safety concerns and these concerns can be passed to management and can help to improve health and safety at the firm
- - - - Official strike
        
        Employees refuse to enter the workplace and perform their normal duties. The must hold a secret ballot, give the employer 7 days notice and get approval from their trade union
      - All-out strike
        
        All employees go on strike even those who are not a member of a trade union.
      - Work to rule
        
        Employees carry out their workplace duties as stated in the COP but do not carry out any other duties eg. nurses in a hospital refuse to do any administrative work.
      - Token stoppage
        
        employees refuse to work for a short period of time eg 1 hour- warns the employer that more serious action may be taken if the issue remains unresolved eg prison officers hold work stoppage at Cloverhill due to a dispute about working conditions with the irish prison service.
      - Overtime ban
        
        Employees refuse to work overtime for the employer- puts the employer under pressure to resolve the issue so that profits are not impacted
      - Go slow
        
        Workers do their job as per terms of COP but do them slowly- sends a warning to management- aim is to try and hurt business profits
    - - Unofficial Strike
        
        Employees take strike action but do not follow or meet some or all of the official requirements eg secret ballot is not held
      - Wildcat/ Lightning strike
        
        Employees take strike action without warning the employer- disputes are resolved quickly
      - Political Strike
        
        Employees leave the workplace to protest the governments actions eg the introduction of new laws- illegal as employees shouldn't punish their employer for the governments actions
