States of matter.
Liquids
-
Liquid particles have no fixed shape. They flow past each other. They take the shape of their container. They are close together as they are held by reasonably strong forces. They can not change their volume.
Gases
Gases have no fixed shape and float about in all directions with no gravitational pull. They are just about held together but by extremely weak forces.
-
Expanding solids.
-
When solids heat up their particles vibrate in place and slightly expand. The particles do not change size but slightly spread out.
-
Changes of state.
Solids melt to make a liquid. liquids boil to make a gas. Gas freezes to make a liquid. Liquids freeze to make a solid.
These are called the melting point, freezing point and boiling point.
