Exponents and Roots
Roots
Square roots
The inverse of finding the square of a number is to find it's square root. The symbol is used to indicate the square root of a number
Cube roots
The symbol is used to indicate the cube root of a number. Note that there is a "3" on the outside of the root sign indicating it is a cube root
Cubes
Example: 8 is called the cube of 2, because 2x2x2=8. The number 2 is the base and it is multiplied by itself and again by itself. This action is written in exponential notation as . Which is read as 2 cubed or 2 to the power 3.
A three dimensional figure bounded by six faces, each of the faces is a square.
Squares
Example: 9 is a square of 3 because 3x3 = 9. The number 3 is the base and it is multiplied by itself. This is written in exponential notation of

Exponents
The exponent of a number tells us how many times the number will be used in multiplying it by itself
Example: 2 is the exponent
