Gears
Rack and Pinion 
A rack and pinion gear is used in many different objects and machines. This gear is a type of linear gear, this part of the gear is called the rack. It also has a circular gear that the top which is also known as the pinion. When the rack is being driven then the gear will have rotational motion. When the pinion is being driven then the gear will linear motion. All cars use the rack and pinion gear to move the steering wheel to turn the tyre either left or right. This is an example of the linear motion of the gear. This Is very strong and I might need to use this gear when making my project
Compound gear 
This type of gear is when a lot different size gears are put together. These all are the same type of gear but different sizes, therefore, some of the gears will have to rotate more to have the equivalent of the bigger gears. These gear wheels can all turn in different directions also. This is often known as a compound gear train. An example of a compound gear used today is maybe a mechanical watch or clock (analog clock). This gear is very good and strong I probably will be using it in my project.
Bevel gear 
A bevel gear is when two gears are sitting on top of each other at a 90 degree angle like the one shown on the left. They are very strong and can withstand many gears. An example of a bevel gear used today would be in hand drills and mechanical garage doors. This is really good gear but I probably won’t be using it in my project.
Worm gear 
A worm gear is a really good gear and is used in many different mechanics. The basic idea of this gear is that there are to types of gears that mesh together to form one gear. One part of the gear is the top part which is called the worm screw and the bottom part is called a worm wheel. This turn the worm wheel 360 degrees. A worm wheel can be used in lots of instruments like guitars double basses etc... I probably won’t be using this in my project
Ratchet and Pawl 
This gear is a very useful and strong gear and is used in many different mechanics. How this gear works is that there are two parts one part is the ratchet which is the main circular gear and the second part is the pawl which is the small handle that rests on the ratchet. The ratchet only spins in one direction as the pawl prevents it from spinning back wards. Lots of different mechanics use this gear, for example, jacks, hoists, and a drive head quick release like the one shown below. I probably won’t be using this in my project.
