bodies were mummified in the ash and scientists are able to find out a lot by looking at theese mummified people.
By looking at the aging of the bones they could tell what age the people were when most of them died. And they could also establish their diets by looking at their teeth and what remains left in their bodies.
On a normal day the wind of have blown the ash from Vesuvius away from them but on the day of the eruption, it just so happened that the wind was blowing directly towards Pompeii.
