Maslow's hierarchy of needs
1954: Abraham Maslow put forward his theory of what motivates humans
He said that work fulfills and important role in satisfying human needs
It's split into 2 levels (bottom to top)
"All humans have similar needs and these have an order of priority"
Low order needs
Esteem
People desire self-esteem
It grows when people
Feel good about themselves
Proud of something they have done
When people experience a sense of achievement
Work helps by giving projects to work
And a self of achievement if they are succesful
Self-actualization
People's need to fulfil their potential is the ultimate sense of achievement
A feeling that they have done something with their life
It continues to motivate people to work harder and experience new things
High order needs
Physiological
Essentials for human survival
The most important needs
Ex: food, water, shelter, rest, sleep
Work helps to satisfy these needs by providing money
Safety
People seek safety needs of security
Freedom from stress and sense of stability
Work helps to satisfy these needs by providing money to buy security
Ex: security of body, employment, resources, family, health and property
Belonging
People have the desire to belong to a group (friends, family)
Social needs
Work helps to satisfy these needs by giving an environment where people can interact
