Those who were rewarded had acted out of compassion, out of mercy - out of love - without counting the cost or seeking reward
Those who were rejected had been like the rich young ruler - what should I do to inherit eternal life?
Just like him, they may have fed the poor, visited the sick and those in prison - but without mercy, without compassion
Maybe hoping to stack up enough brownie points to be noticed by a Jesus who never seemed to be there to see how good they were
1 Cor 13:3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

So we start to see that it's not what the people did that identified them as sheep or goats, but their attitude
