        Poynting vector is conservation of energy in electromagnetic field whereas the transfer of energy by an electromagnetic wave is at right angles to both electric and magnetic components of the wave vibration and its rate is proportional to the vector product of their amplitudes.
        
        Since the magnitude of S changes at a very fast rate, an average value of the vector is more appropriate to use. The irradiance Ir for a particular point in space is as follows:
        
        intensity is defined as the amount of energy going through an area perpendicular to the beam, while irradiance refers to what amount of energy arrives on a certain surface with a given orientation.
