PLASTICS
THERMO SETTING PLASTICS
Thermo Setting Plastics:
- can't be remoulded
- molecules are closely linked
-
Urea Formaldehyde (UF):
- hard, brittle
- good insulator
-
Epoxy Resin:
- good for joining different materials together (wood & metal)
- expensive
-
Melamine:
- scratch resistant
- water resistant
- stain resistant
-
Problems:
- takes thousands of years to degrade
- they don't rot/corrode
- uses fossil fuel oil
- can't be recycled
- Recycling process can be polluting
- it's still likely to end up in landfill
Raw material:
- oil based
not good to be using much of it, it's finite
-
Thermo Plastics
- can be recycled
- can be reheated and reshaped
- molecules are loosely linked
-
Polypropylene (PP):
- easy to cut (laser/knife)
- translucent
- wide variety of colours
- versatile
-
High impact polystyrene (HIPS):
- used in vacuum forming
- cheap
- workable
-
ABS:
- strong
- tough
injection moulded, household products
-
Acrylic:
- good insulator
blow moulding, vacuum forming, line bending
-
