Main Points
-
Neurological /psychological traumas may be associated with childhood stuttering in those without family histories.
Research suggests differences in the function of the right and left hemisphere in people who stutter. The right hemisphere – which is NOT the language center – may be the dominant hemisphere for language in people who stutter.
Activation issues may exist in the areas of the brain responsible for speech motor planning and auditory processing.
Structurally, the brains of people who stutter may be less myelinated; coordination of speech movements impacted.
-
Stuttering is associated with abnormal connectivity in areas tied to attention, motor performance, perception, and emotion.
