Gender roles
Steryotypes - influenced by capitalism, christianity, etc. [allan johnson]
Women- Submissive, heterosexual wives, under men, oppressed by patriarchy, rape/abuse victims, roll forced on them [bell hooks, allan johnson, "girl" poem]
Men - Dominant, heterosexual husbands, above women, benefit from patriarchy, but are also subjected to steryotyping [allan johnson], rapists/abusers permitted by society, role forced on them [allan johnson]
Western binary - Colonization dictating "mainstream"
Two spirit documentary - Indigenous gender concepts versus western gender binary. Presents the idea of Christian values being imposed on indigenous culture influencing more toxic gender roles.
Upbringing
Outside the western binary
Fa'fafine - Oppressed within society, accepted within culture. Extremely culturally significant identity, has distinct roles+functions.
Two spirit - Identity abandoned by indigenous peoples who conformed to the western binary. Rejected by the western binary, but extremely culturally important within different indigenous cultures
Within the western binary
"Girl" - Gender roles are forced onto young girls, not giving them a chance to decide for themselves what gender is.
Bell Hooks, Allan Johnson - Men and women are brought up differently, forced to subject themselves to the patriarchy. Men inherit privilege from this, women do not.
