Dharma
has many meanings
set of guidelines for proper righteos conduct by individuals
overarching cosmic order
assumes specific acts are necessary to maintain order (cosmic, natural and social)
origins of dharma appear in two Vedic ideas
rta - proper, right, fit, divine law, righteousness
rna - the debts one must repay
Karma
focuses on personal behaviour and destiny
primary ethical responsibility rests on the individual
lapse of karma explains birth defects, disease, forms of suffering that resist medical treatment, and death
the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences
Samsara
the cycle of death and birth to which life in the material world is bound
Ahimsa
respect for all living things and the avoidance of violence towards others
