RULERS FOR PRONOUNS AND ANTECEDENT AGREEMENT
RULE #1
A phrase or a clause between subject and verb DOES NOT CHANGE number of the antecedent.
Example: The bookstore closes at 8:00pm.
RULE #2
Singular indefinte pronoun antecedent must be used with singular pronouns. Plural indefinte pronoun antecedent must be used with the plural pronoun.
Example: Each cat is sleeping on
its bed.
Both are doing their homeworks.
RULE #4
If a compound subject is joined by OR/NOR, the pronoun needs to agree with the antecedent closest to the pronoun. (The pronound you are trying to figure out!)
Example: Either you or your friend needs to tell me the true.
RULE #3
Compound subject joined by AND always use a plural pronoun.
Example: María and Germán love to play tennis and they play everyday.
RULE #6
Plural form subjects with a singular pronoun. (news, meales, mumps, physics, etc.)
Example: The news is on TV right now.
RULE #5
Singular: the jury are acting as one unit.
Plural: the jury members are acting as twelve individuals.
Example: The group is on the mountain.
The group members
are very tired.
RULE #7
Every or many a before a noun or a series of nouns requires a singular pronoun.
Example: Every building of the street has been redecorated by its owners.
