Teenagers would "come out" and proclaim their abstinence. It was something many were proud of and saw as a revolutionary idea.
Young evangelicals saw themselves as "defiant" and independently minded as they dedicated themselves to abstinence before marriage.
Individuals claimed this lifestyle was not religious, instead it was based on personal empowerment.
Some young evangelicals would compare their actions to that of queer activism. This means their virginity would be an expression of sexual identity.
