18-th century Europe, for ex, devotion to the state was considered a betrayal of devotion to the church

Leo Tolstoy (87), claimed patriotism both stupid & immoral
George Kateb (2000), patriotism is a mistake twice over: it's typically a grave moral error & its source is typically a state of mental confusion
Simon Keller (2005), patriotism involves endorsement of one's country
Pros
a love of country and shared pride bring the people together, helping them endure challenges
- without shared patriotic beliefs, a colony may not have chosen to travel the road to independence
- patriotism may brought the people together to overcome certain challenges during the Great Depression & World War II
