Emotional Process
Mentors may not feel confident enough to come forward and question students abilities/doubts about own decision making
Mentor may feel guilt about the consequences of failing a student
Mentor may like student and want to see them succeed, regardless of ability

Environment
Mentor may pass student in early placement hoping that they will progress/catch up at a later stage in their training
Inadequate time spent with designated mentor during placement

Mentors shifts/contracted hours
Student sickness
Student might prefer to work with another qualified nurse
Very busy working environment - mentor too busy to teach
Student has multiple placements during their training and mentors from each placement do not get a chance to discuss student with each other
Mentor has not discussed concerns with senior then feels it is too late to address
Mentor feels lack of support from nurse manager or colleagues
Nurses may have insufficient competence in mentoring/lack of experience
