Science that studies the mental processes related to the use of language.
LANGUAGE PRODUCTION
Area that studies how language is conceived in our minds and subsequently produced orally or in writing.
Conceptualisation: in this stage the message is conceived in the mind of the person.
Formulation: at this stage the words needed for the transmition of the message are selected.
Articulation: stage in which the message is delivered orally or in writing.
Self-monitoring: stage to identify and self-correct errors in messages.
LANGUAGE LOSS
Area that studies the different reasons for the loss of knowledge acquired about a language.
Lack of opportunities to practice it.
Immigrants in a foreing country where L1 is not spoken.
Phatological problems (accidents, age, disease).
LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Area of study that examines the stages by which humans acquire their first language.
Babies' crying: stage that prepares vocal system.
Cooing: sounds used to express pleasure.
Babbling: production of some consonants and syllables.
First word: appearance of the first words. Situation of idiomorphs and egocentric speech.
Grammar production: use of words to produce complete sentences
LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION
Area that studies the steps we follow to process language input through visual or auditory perception.
Decoding: identifying linguistic input.
Code:
linguistic analysis of the message.
Parsing: word segmentation and recognition to give syntactic and semantic meaning.
Interpreting: Infer the intended meaning.
