DERMATOFIBROMA
DEFINITION
Benign dermal nodules with focal proliferation of fibroblasts
CAUSES
Reactive tissue changes
Altered immunity
Genetic mutations
Reaction to insect bites
Compromised immune system
Autoimmune disorders eg systemic lupus erythematosus
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Skin biopsy to determine present skin cells
MRI to determine extent of cancer
Head to toe physical examination
Fitzpatrick's evaluation test
MANAGEMENT
Radiation therapy to kill cancer cells
Targeted therapy to attack cancer cells
Mohs surgery to remove thin layers of cancer-containing skin
Freezing cancer with liquid nitrogen
Excisional surgery with normal margin tissue
Laser therapy
Shaving the top of dermatofibroma to flatten growth
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Nodules can grow anywhere in the body
This results in small dense stone-like growths
This noncancerous growth is called nodules
They are firm to the touch
Small harmless growth of noncancerous cells occurs
These accumulate in deeper layers of skin
NURSING MANAGEMENT
Diagnosis
Small tender bumps firm to the touch
Insufficient knowledge about condition
Intervention
Assess history of the lesion
Carefull examine lesion with enough amount of light
Refer patient to oncology specialists
Refer patient for therapy
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Round bumps underneath the skin
Painless and harmless bumps
Itchy and tender skin growths
Usually dimple inside when pinched
Red, pink, gray skin growths
HEALTH EDUCATION
Dermatofibroma is not contagious.
Seek medical health when growths bleed
Never attempt to remove growth at home
