Inhalation anthrax
Biological terror agent
S&S
Sore throat, mild fever, myalgia, mild cough, and malaise, progresses to sever coughing, lethargy, shock, confusion, fainting and death
Pathogen and virulence factors
Cause
bacillus anthracis
Virulence factors
A capsule and anthrax toxin
Pathogenesis and epidemiology
Anthrax
not spread from person to person
acquired by contact or inhalation
Dx
identifying bacteria in sputum
Tx
antimicrobial- PCN
Influenza
S&S
Sudden fever, pharyngitis, congestion, cough, myalgia
Pathogen and virulence factors
Influenza virus type A+B
occurs via antigenic shift and drift
Pathogenesis
Virus causes damage to lung epithelium
Epidemiology
infection provides some immunological protection from similar strains
Dx
S&S
lab tests like ELISA immunofluoresence and rapid antigen test
Tx
supportive care
oseltamivic and zanamivir
Prevention
Immunizations
good hand hygiene
Coronavirus respiratory syndrome
S&S
high fever, SOB, difficulty breathing, malaise, body aches
Pathogen and virulence factors
Cause
coronaviruses
Pathogenesis and epidemiology
spread via respiratory droplets
Dx
based on S&S
Respiratory syncytial virus
Most common childhood respiratory disease in newborns and young children
S&S
fever, runny nose, coughing in babies or immunocompromised people, cyanosis, wheezing, plugs of mucus, fibrin and deaf cells- hard to breath
Pathogen
Respiratory syncytial virus, unstable outside body
Soap and H2O deactivates RSV
Pathogenesis
causes syncytia to form in lungs
Dx
based on S&S, verification of RSV made by immunoessay
Tx
Administering O2, IV fluids and medication to decrease fever, AB to decrease infection
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HSP)
S&S
fever, fatigue, muscle aches progress to cough, shock, and labored breathing
Cause
hantavirus
pathogenesis
Hantavirus- travels throughout body into blood
infection causes widespread inflammation leading to shock
epidemiology
Human disease more likely as mouse population increases
Dx
low platelet count, sudden onset fever, muscle aches
Tx
none
Prevention
Control of rodents
