TINEA CAPITIS
DEFINITION
Ringworm infection that develop on the skin
it also develops inside the hair follicles on the scalp
Ringworm is a fungal infection that causes bright red-ring-shaped rash when it appears on the trunk, extremities or face.
Areas of the body that ringworms typically affect includes: Hands, groin, feet, toenails and trunk
CAUSES
Fungi called dermatophytes cause ringworm of the scalp.
Fungi thrive on dead tissue such as fingernail, hair and outer layers of the skin
One can get ringworms by touching skin of an affected person
by using combs, bedding or other object of an infected person
House pets, such as cats and dogs can spread rignworms
Farm animals like goats, cows, horses and pigs can be carriers
SYMPTOMS
Most common symptom of ringworm is itchy patches on the scalp
Hair may breast off near the scalp, leaving bald spot
Black dots where the hair has broken off
Painful scalp
Swollen lymph node
Low-grade fever
DIAGNOSIS
Visual examination
Dr may use special light called wood's lamp to illuminate the scalp an determine signs of infection
Skin or hair samples to confirm diagnosis
TREATMENT
MEDICAL
Antifungal medication
griseofulvin and terbinafine hydrochloride( oral meds) both have same side effect include diarrhea
other possible side effects of griseosulvin
Sun sensitivity
vomiting
Dizziness
Allergic reactions ( people who are allergic to penicillin)
Side effects of terbinafine hydrochloride
Stomach pain
Itching
Rash
Loss of taste
Fever
PREVENTION
Avoid petting animals that have patches of skin showing true fur
Resular shampooing hand washing
Adult should advice children to avoid sharing of hair brushes
