Conformity and Obedience - Coggle Diagram
Conformity and Obedience
3 types: acceptance, compliance, obedience
-
Asch study on grp pressure: 6 confederates say incorrect answers and 1 participant said the wrong answer as well, even if he knew it was the wrong answer
Obedience study: teachers and students example
- students = confederates
- teacher = participant
- the teacher supposed to give a little shock to as high as 450 volts to students when they gave a wrong answer (many tchs complied even tho they could hear the cries and sufferings (recorded) of the 'students")
= teachers acted with greatest obedience in the physical presence of the experimenter (authoritative figure)
what breeds obedience?
institutional authority (social power) : eg. teachers
claimed that they had obeyed due to the prestige of Yale University
liberating effect of group influence/ conformity:
when 2 confederates defied the experimenter, the tch conformed to their defiance
-
closeness and legitimacy of the authority : the closer the authority, the more obedience
-
what breeds compliance?
Group size:
3-5 better than 1-2
more than 5 yields diminishing returns
2 independent grp w 2 pp elicit more conformity than 4 pp
-
-
Status: higher status lower status
higher status more influence to / impact others to conform while lower status pp tend to conform
Public response: making a public response maximizes conformity since they must respond in front of ppl
no prior commitment: if one is committed to smth, one wld not be likely to conform
eg. commitment to movements, public commitment, behavior, position
reactance: happens when one feels that their freedom is threatened, motive to protect or restore one's sense of freedom
