On February 10, 2007, he officially announced his candidacy in subsequent presidential consultations. In the primary elections of the Democratic Party, after a bitter dispute, he defeated Hillary Clinton, senator in office for the State of New York and former first lady, favorite of the eve; on June 3, 2008, Obama reached the necessary quorum for the candidacy, thus becoming the first person of African American descent to run for the White House to represent one of the two major parties.
