Definitions of globalisation
economic - this involves the interconnectedness of the world's economies, through global trade, trading blocs (e.g. EU) and trade tariffs
political globalisation - political ideas are influential around the world sometimes leading to protests and even military interventions. The political leadership in different countries is increasingly interconnected, with more powerful liberal democratic capitalist countries often intervening weaker or smaller regimes e.g. USA intervention in countries they deem undemocratic e.g. Iraq, Balkans, Rwanda
cultural globalisation - with globalised communication comes the spread and sharing of national cultures, potentially leading to more similarities between cultures across the world, cultural homogenisation (Hall)
McLuhan - 'the global village'. He likened communications and media in the 1960s to a giant central nervous system which ultimately would connect everybody in the world. and with over 5 billion with mobile phones on route to fulfilling his prophecy.
McLuhan said that this would eventually compress the world's thousands of cultures into one 'super culture', predicting cultural homogenisation

The digital revolution
refers to the massive and rapid advances in technology which have transported people's lives over the past few decades, Giddens' analogy of 24 hrs - agricultural, industrial and technological revolutions
initially there is the extension and development of existing forms of media on various new platforms
media is 'new' as it's through new forms of platform which are used in various new ways and allow a number of types of programmes that help people communicate in more dynamic ways - empowering for women - BATES
The global village MCLUHAN
the idea that as time and distance shrink, the world becomes smaller - distanciation
which increases people's ability to create and maintain social relationships.
Virtual communities
is a social network of individuals who create an online community which may or may not reflect their offline lives
Carter - cybercity. She suggests that people in Cybercity are investigating as much effort in maintaining relationships in cyberspace as in other spaces - authenticity
Social networks/social capital
Many people form all types of different relationships online: eg friendship groups, work/family networks, linked with hobbies/interests/religion
Castells - power rests in networks, draws on Marxist ideas. We are moving on from the industrial age into an age defined my information.
Media convergence
refers to the way that a whole range of a different kinds of information can be combined and delivered in one format. Also refers to the ways in which social media platforms are able communicate with each other to share contacts, technological convergence with e.g. mobile a computer, camera, phone etc. Economic convergence with Tech Giants FAANGs - MARXISM
Big data
Big data are large sets of data that may be analysed digitally and non-digitally to reveal patterns, trends and links, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions
Volume - amount of data
Velocity - data is streamed at unprecedented speed and must be dealt with promptly
Variety - all formats
Variability - increasing velocities and varieties of data
Complexity - data coming from multiple sources
Algorithms - Artificial Intelligence AI surveillance and control V inventive and medical cures
