Exercise physiology pt 4
COPD and exercise
-ambulation and feeling of well-being can increase significantly in those with mild to moderate COPD
-controversial for those with severe COPD
-only those with stable COPD should exercise in non medical setting
HR response to exercise
-normal individuals HR increases rapidly with moderate exercise as result of decreased parasympathetic and inc in sympathetic nerve activity
-transplanted heart is denervated. heart relies on circulating catecholamines to inc HR. takes longer for HR to increase at start and decrease at end of activity
Resting HR
higher in individuals with heart transplant because they no longer have normal parasympathetic tone to slow intrinsic rate of depolarization of SA node

living at altitude
-living at moderate altitudes improves tolerance for exercise at high altitudes (less decrease in max VO2 and lactate accumulation compared to those living at sea level)
-larger max ventilation during max exercise
-hematocrit levels increase after ~25 days of exposure to high altitudes
-some studies indicate decreased pulmonary function, CO, muscle enzyme capacity, and lean body mass at high altitudes
