        A wife (Leonore) seeks to rescue her husband (Florestan), who has been wrongly imprisoned To do so she dresses up as a male, and is then given a job by the jailer (whose daughter proceeds to fall in love with the undercover wife)
      - Beethoven began to write this Opera 2 years after his Heiligenstadt Testament
        
        Heiligenstadt Testament was a private document written when the composer discovered he was going deaf. He sought to compose as much as he could, as he was sure that it was irreversible contrary to 6 years of physicians telling him otherwise

      - Originally titled Leonore and first premiering in 1805. Was changed in 1814 to *Fidelio and some changes to the opera were made
    - - Leonore is angry at the beginning of the Aria, trying to understand the logic of the circumstance, and why such a person in power cannot find mercy. As the aria progresses, she quickly abandons this anger, as she find comfort in her surroundings and signs. She then triumphantly goes on to sign of her unwavering devotion, and is determined by the end of the song to complete her mission to free her husband

However, as it progresses, Tamino becomes increasingly confused, as he is brought forth information Sarasthro is not the evil tyrant he initially thought.

        A Prince (Tamino) is saved by three women who are loyal to the Queen of the Night. He then becomes infatuated by her daughter (Pamina), whom he has not yet met, but will rescue from what he assumes is an evil devil.
