Fiber type (Pg 40)
Type I
-slow twitch
-low velocity of shortening
-good resistance to fatigue
-small diameter
-serobic metabolism
-activated during moderate-intensity, long-duration exercise (ie jogging)
-also activated during high-intensity, short-term exercise (ie sprinting)
Type IIa
-intermediate twitch
-intermediate velocity of shortening
-average resistance to fatigue
-intermediate diameter
-aerobic and anaerobic metabolism
Type IIb
-fast twitch
-high velocity of shortening
-poor resistance to fatigue
-large diameter
-anaerobic metabolism
-activated during high-intensity, short-term exercise (ie sprinting)
-
-Type I fibers cannot change to type II, however, type I can improve use of anaerobic metabolism and Type II can improve ability to use aerobic metabolism
-type IIb fibers can be converted to IIa with endurance/strength training

-
athletic amennorhea
-women who train heavily have higher levels of catecholamines, cortisol, and beta-endorphins
-inhibits release of luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormones decreasing levels of estradiol
-physical/emotional stress, diet and presence of menstrual irregularity before training can contribute
