Exploring Health Professions
My Strengths/Understanding myself
So what?
I often focus mainly on my negative attributes so recognizing my strengths was refreshing and gave me some confidence. I also had to recognize that I can't let people take advantage of my strengths.
Now what?
Now that I am aware of my strengths I can use them to my advantage to promote self awareness and use them to help my future patients.
What?
I was able to take a quiz to help me identify my top 5 strengths. My 5 strengths were empathy, consistency, achiever, developer, and responsibility.
Professional Documents/Networking
So What?
When applying to a new job or position, the first thing your hopeful employer looks at is your resume. It is very important that you have a proper and professional resume that portrays an accurate representation yourself.
Now what?
I need to remember to set aside time to update and revise my resume so when I do decide to apply for a new job, it is the most accurate representation of myself. My goal is to update my resume quarterly.
What?
In class and out of class we watched informational videos, looked at examples of others' professional documents such as resumes, and learned why it was so important to have these professional document perfected. I created several drafts of a resume until I felt it was ready for a job search.
Networking and Experiential Learning
So what?
LinkedIn is a way to connect with future employers and make other job connections, it is important to build your profile to show your true self and potential if future employers do view it.
What?
Learned why building LinkedIn profile is so important and how to do so. We also learned about other experiential learning opportunities and how they will boost knowledge and will look great on resume.
Now what?
Now that I have built my LinkedIn profile, I need to remember to continue to revise it as I revise my resume. I also need to take advantage of some of these experiential learning opportunities, this can help me learn more about what exact field I want to go into in healthcare.
Patient Experience
So what?
It is very important to have empathy especially being in healthcare. In the Cleveland Clinic video it proved that you never know what someone else is going through. Growing up my mom always enforced the idea that you never know what someone else is going through so I have always kept that in the back of my mind. I think that helped me become a more empathetic person.
Now what?
Especially in health care when dealing with patients I need to remember that what the patient/family is going through can make them act irrationally.
What?
In class we watched videos focused on how important it is to have empathy in healthcare. Empathy is actually one of my top 5 strengths. I specifically remember watching the Cleveland Clinic Video, it brought tears to my eyes.
Implicit Bias
So what?
I never myself to be biased at all, but after taking that quiz I learned that almost everyone has some bias. It is so important in health care to have an open mind and to try to be unbiased so eliminate health care privileges, but unfortunately that is very hard to do.
Now what?
By taking the quiz, I now can be more conscious of what I am biased on and try to eliminate that bias.
What?
Guest speaker Doe Gavin came and talked to use about implicit bias and health care privileges. I was really glad that although our class was online, we were still able to hear from guest speakers to farther our knowledge.
Extremist Film/ Code of Ethics
So what?
I realized that even when your patients in brain dead and nonresponsive it is still important to explain things to them and treat them like they can hear. It is important to inform the family and respect their wishes and what they decide to do.
Now what?
It is important to respect and consider the code of ethics when dealing with any patient and their family. This doctor had an extremely tough job, I realized I wouldn't have the heart to work in this field of health care.
What?
In class, we watched the film Extremist which was about a particular doctor who handles end of life care. After watching the film, we met in small groups to discuss the code of ethics and how they were handles in the film.
Healthcare Diversity Symposium
So what?
I always knew diversity was important in health care, but I never realized the true affect that it does have on the patient. Having healthcare providers that relate to the patient socially, ethically, racially, etc. helps the patient feel as if they are getting better care.
Now what?
Even though I might not be seen as the most diverse person, I would like to continue to keep my views open and remain unbiased to make my patients feel comforted and as if they are getting the best care possible.
What?
I attended 3 lightening talk rounds. I am so glad we were required to attend this symposium in this class because I would not have attended or known about this if I didn't. I learned so much about how important diversity is in healthcare while watching these videos.
Competitive Application
So what?
I now know what to expect in a formal job interview.
Now what?
I now have an idea of what proper questions I should be prepared for a job interview as well as what to wear. I also am aware of some resources UC provides to help revise students resumes tot help their students be successful in finding a job.
What?
A guest speaker came to talk to us about ways to prepare for a job interview and what to expect. I personally have never had to experience a formal job interview, so this was very helpful.
Interprofessionalism
So what?
The healthcare team that was bickering and in disagreement infront of the patients caused the patient to not get proper care and just caused the patients more distress. The patient got much better care in the other video where the healthcare team worked together to treat the patient and his needs.
Now what?
This helped me realize what healthcare enviroment I want to work in. In the the healthcare field, it is very important to be able to work in a team.
What?
In class, we watched 2 videos and compared the professionalism used in both videos. In one video the healthcare team acted very unprofessional in front of the patients, while in the other video the healthcare team working together and appeared to be more professional in front of the patient.
