TRANSPORT ACROSS CELL MEMBRANES
Passive Transport
Definition (Def): Is a process by which and ion or molecules passes through a cell wall via a concentration gradient, or from a high area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
An example of passive transport is Simple Diffusion which is the movement of solutes that occurs when its electrochemical potentials on the two sides of a permeable barrier are diffrent.
Definition and examples of molecules
Another examples of passive transport is Osmosis which is the movement of a solvent like water through a semipermeable membrane into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalize the concentrations of solute on the two sides of the membrane.
Definition and examples of molecules
Another example of passive transport is Filtration which is the process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid, by causing the latter to pass through the pores of some substance and this is called a filter.
Definition and examples of molecules
The final examples of passive transport is Facilitated Diffusion which is the diffusion of solutes through transport proteins in the plasma membrane.
Definition and examples of molecules
Active Transport
Def: Is the movement of ions or molecules across a cellular membrane from a lower to a higher concentration, requiring the consumption of energy.
Exocytosis
Exocytosis is the process of vesicles fusing with the plasma membrane and releasing their contents to the outside of the cell. Furthermore, it occurs when a cell produces substances for export, such as a protein, or when the cell is getting rid of a waste product or a toxin.
Ion Pump: Na-K pump
Ion Pump is a type of vacuum pump which operates by sputtering a metal getter. In addition, its function is to convert energy from various sources to potential energy by pumping an ion up its concentration gradient. On the other hand, Na-K pump is a protein pump found in the cell membrane of neurons. Additionally, its function is to transport sodium and potassium ions across the cell membrane in a ratio of 3 sodium ions out of every 2 potassium ions brought in.
Endocytosis
Def: Is the process of actively transporting molecules into the cell by engulfing it with its membrane.
Another example or type of Endocytosis is Phagocytosis that is the process by which the cell takes in substances from the extracellular fluid that it needs to function.
Definition, Examples
An example or type of Endocytosis is Pinocytosis that is the process by which cells internalize large particles or cells, like damaged cells and bacteria.
