Petroleum System: Reservoir, Seal & Trap
Reservoir
Characteristics
Porosity
Pore space / voids, that is generally filled with water, but contains oil or gas within it
-
-
-
-
Types of reservoir rocks
All types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary & metamorphic)
Most common reservoir is sedimentary rocks (shale, siltstone, sandstone, limestone & dolomite)
Seal & Trap
Definition
Seal
An impermeable layer of rock that forms a barrier or cap above and around a reservoir rock to helps prevent fluids from migrating beyond the reservoir
Usually composed of shale, chalks, clays, anhydrite or salt, a seal
Trap
geological structure that affects the reservoir rock and caprock of a petroleum system allowing the accumulation of hydrocarbons in a reservoir
