PLATELETS
FUNCTION
PRIMARY HAEMOSTASIS
- Platelet plug formation at site of injury
- Responsible for cessation of bleeding from microvasculature
3 steps :
- platelet adhesion,
- platelet granule release and
- platelet aggregation
-
SECONDARY HAEMOSTASIS
- Involves plasma coagulation system
- Takes several minutes to complete
Small (1-4 micrometers in diameter), discoid, non-nucleate
structures with red-purple granules
Normal platelet count :
150,000 – 400,000/microliter
Lifespan : 7 – 10 days
70% in circulation, 30% in spleen

THROMBOPOIESIS
INTRODUCTION
- Process by which platelets are formed is called thrombopoiesis
- Fragmentation of cytoplasm of megakaryotes in bone marrow
- Under control of Thrombopoietin
