2.1 Types of Software
Open-source software allows users to use, edit and distribute the software to anyone. It may also be developed collaboratively. However, open-source software may not have as many features as paid software.
With closed-source software, the publisher keeps the intellectual property, so users cannot access the source code. Closed-source software usually has a lot of features, and numerous security patches, but can be expensive.
Off-the-shelf software can be purchased online or from a shop. It usually comes with many features, but a lot of them are unnecessary, making the software bloated.
2.2 Application Software
Application software is designed to carry out tasks such as account management, text creation and editing, presentation preparation and design drawing.
Productivity software is designed to make your everyday tasks easier and more efficient to complete.
Development tools are programs that developers use to create, debug or maintain other programs and applications.
Business software refers to any software used for business purposes, in order to increase productivity, measure productivity, and perform other business functions accurately.

2.3 Utility Software
Utility software is used to help analyse, configure, optimise or maintain a computer. It is utilised to support the computer’s infrastructure, in contrast to application software, which aims to benefit the user.
Antivirus software is designed to detect and remove malware from your computer, as well as preventing further malware from infecting your computer. It usually also includes protection against other Internet threats, including adware, phishing and dangerous URLs.
Compression software reduces the size of files, such as images or sound files. This is useful when sending attachments via e-mail, or when you are running out of storage. However, once a compressed file is received, it does need to be uncompressed.
Files are stored in sectors, and over time they end up getting scattered all across your computer, which often results in the computer running more slowly. Disk defragmentation software organises these files properly, helping your computer to access them as quickly as possible.
Backup software backs up files, databases or the entire storage unit, so that in the event of data loss, you can restore your data easily. Backups can be automatic or manual.
