Grade 1 Pre-assessment on a new unit on
length and measurement
Pre-assessment consisted of 2 on grade level questions (comparing the length of two items; completing a few questions from reading a graph) and 2 above grade level questions (understanding the correct way to measure with centimerter cubes and a word problem using comparing and addition)
Orange Group: 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Student-Led Learning
Students will focus on deepening their higher order thinking skills, apply their current knowledge to more complex problems.
-
Assessment
Observations, asking open ended questions, worksheets, 3,2,1 exit tickets, student presentation to the whole class
-
-
Green Group: 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
-
Yellow Group: 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Teacher-Led Instruction
Focus on the essential lessons required for this unit using explicit instruction, breaking down the steps, modeling each concept and reading aloud
Assessments
An exit ticket after each lesson with one question on it requiring a Y/N answer to see progress. Verbally follow up with the students immediately after completing it or before the next lesson to clarify any misunderstandings.
Observations

Greater use of math manipulatives, pictures and real objects for hands on learning
Re-assess the ELL students orally simplifying the language of the 4 questions in the pre-assessment to see if they have a greater understanding of the concepts than initially thought
