The technical skills and social practices needed to effectively interact with and communicate via digital technologies.
Essential 21st century skills and are increasingly important in education curricula all over the world.
Conceptualisation
Students need a range of digital literacy skills so that they can engage with and interpret messages that combine language with multiple media, which are shared on social media platforms.
Digital literacies provide support for students’ learning inside and outside of the classroom. They are becoming essential for future jobs and they are an integral part of everyday life.
Dudeney, Hockly and Pegrum (2013) say, that “for our language teaching to remain relevant, our lessons must encompass a wide variety of literacies which go well beyond tradition print literacy”.
Examples
Memes are an example of digital literacies. To successfully make a meme you need to have an understanding of modern internet vernacular, culture and society.
You need to be creative and be able to work with text and images to make a meme. You must be able to participate in internet (sub)cultures so that you can share your meme with others.
You also must have a sense of social appropriacy. Is your meme offensive to others? Do you intend for your meme to be offensive to others or is it intended to be satire?
