sexual selection in animals
Mate attraction:
Dress up smart
attractive sexual orientation - used as an indicator of quality for females. (peacock)
Sing a song
ability to produce complex notes depends upon how the phenotype develops, exposure to pathogen effects vocal code development (a better song is an indicator of gene quality and health)
Dance
,
an indicator of physical fitness & gene quality
Give a gift
(penguin with pebbles) indicator of investment
Build houses
an indicator of creativity.
Creat artwork
.
(pufferfish) indicator of creativity, females will choose to mate with the best pattern.
Battle for dominance
In the animal kingdom, it is typically males who do courting and females who do the choosing.
some exception when parental investment is shared. why?
Parental investment theory (Trivers, 1972)
anisogamy leads to sex differences in parental investment. Female sex cells are a lot larger, more limited and more costly to produce, this means minimum obligatory investment for females which leads to low fitness variance ( females cannot produce much compared to males, so they have to make sure their limited offspring are of high fitness, making them more picky )
Male traits evolve for 2 key purposes
inter sexual display of quality - display of mate quality to opposite sex
run away selection: trait expressed by male is a prefrence for the female
handicaps (costly signals)= high quality genes.
evolution of inter sexual competition - traits that enable competition
strength, weapons , competativeness
