Natural selection
-
Variance exists within a gene pool: some are more beneficial to survival or replication than others, especially if environments change
e.g. predation, adaption to the environment or competitive edge - all act as drivers for selection
sexual selection
a subset of natural selection, driven by the mate preference of the opposite sex members of the species
-
Parental investment (Trivers, 1972)
the larger the cost of reproduction = the more selective over mates. reproduction is more costly to females so they are more selective then males.
explains difference in sexual strategies: e.g. competition via physical quality vs competition via dominance
