NOUN CLAUSE**
Definition
A dependent clause which functions as a noun or
noun phrase
=> subject, object, or complement
Ex: I didn’t know how she got there all by herself.
Beginning with THAT, a question word, or IF/
WHETHER
Two types of nominal clauses
Derived from statements ➔ that-clauses
Ex: That he is not the best choice goes without saying.
Ex: She believed (that) everything would be fine.
Derived from questions ➔ wh-clauses
Ex: The question is
what we can do to solve the problem.(What can we do to solve the problem?)
Ex: The question is whether we can do anything to solve the problem.(Can we do anything to solve the problem?)
WHETHER and IF
Used with embedded Yes/No questions
Ex: Do you know whether/if there’s a good film on tonight?
IF is preferred when
IF is preferred when
The noun clause is the object of the verb.
Ex: I don't know if I can do anything to help.
WHETHER is used in other positions
Talking about choices or alternatives
Ex: It is debatable whether it’s necessary to tell her all about this.
Noun clause as subject
Ex: Whether we will pass this course remains to be seen.
After BE (noun clause as subject complement)
Ex: The question is whether we should risk everything again this time.
After a preposition
Ex: We need to discriminate between whether she really needs the money or is just being greedy.
After a noun
Ex: The question whether to wait another year will be discussed today.
Before a to-Infinitive
Ex: I can’t decide whether to go or not.
Immediately before OR NOT
Ex: We have to decide whether or not we are going.
Noun clauses after PREPOSITIONS
Ex: We had a talk about who should be invited.
In different structures

Ex: It wasn’t possible that he could be mistaken.
After an adjectives
Ex: I’m disappointed that I didn’t get the job.
After a noun
Ex: I heard the rumor that the professor had been kidnapped.
Sequence of Tenses The verb tense in the independent clause determines the verb tense in the dependent noun clause
Ex: The president AGREES that solar power IS the answer to the energy crisis.
Ex: The president AGREED that solar power WAS the answer to the energy crisis.
Ex:He TOLD me that he truly LOVES her
Noun clauses as object
We regret that you did not find our product satisfactory. (agree, consider, mean, see, suspect, ask, feel, point out, show, think, assume, find, realize, suggest, understand, believe, say, know, suppose, wonder)
We told the driver we were in a hurry.
(advice, convince, promise, teach, ask, inform, reassure, tell, assure, notify, warn, remind, bet, show, persuade, write)
We explain to the driver that we were in a hurry.
It was assumed that the stock market would continue to rise.
(admit, explain, propose, say, announce, indicate, recommend, suggest, complain, mention, remark, write, declare, point out, report)
