RHESUS SYSTEM
- Rh allelic genes are C or c, D or d and E or e located on chromosome 1
- One set of 3 genes is inherited from each parent
- D antigen is most strongly immunogenic
- Individuals whose blood react with Anti – D antiserum are Rh- positive and those who lack D antigen are Rh-negative

BLOOD COMPONENTS
- Raise O2 carrying capacity of blood
- 1 unit = 1g/dL raise in Hb
- For thrombocytopenia with haemorrhage
- 1 unit = 5,000 to 10,000 raise in count
- Plasma proteins and coagulation factors
- Indicated for patients with coagulation failure
- 1 unit – 2% raise in coagulation factors
- Source of insoluble plasma proteins, fibrinogen, factor VIII and vWF
- 1 unit = 80 IU of factor VIII
