Pre-Assessment Differentiation in 3th Grade Writing

Activities
Step Inside the Story
Ask students read the story, they need to put them in the shoes of the character, like that character's name and the setting. It will help them become more interested in reading and help boost their memory skills!
When they're finished with the book, invite them to imagine that they're one of the main characters from the book. Then, on the sheet of paper, have them answer and explain the following:
1.Describe what happened during the event. How did it make you feel?
How did you solve the problem?
Was anyone else involved?
If so, who? What role did they play?
Storyteller
Have students use a marker to divide a sheet of paper into four sections.
Ask them to write the following words in the boxes (the words should be in order from top to bottom, left to right): First, Next, Then, Finally.
Have them think of a story they would like to tell and write down notes on a separate sheet of paper.
Assessments
Use thumbs up/side/down to quickly check their understanding, use individual board to let students to write down their answers. Before they get to write, brainstorm the story lines.
12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Activities
Re-teach the transition words, help students to express the relationships between different sentences or parts of a sentence.
Review the hamburger strategy, help students to practice introduction topic sentence, supporting details, and conclusion closing sentence.
Assessments
Use four corners to check their understanding of the hamburger model, and play Kahoot game to check their knowledge of transition words.
Pre-Assessment: Use Carousel Brainstorm to evaluate student's knowledge. Chart papers containing statements or questions for student are posted around the classroom, students will write down their answers on a blank paper, they are allowed to stay in each station in 2mins. After they finish, they will change the answers with each other and get it scored. Based on their scores, I will divided them into different groups.

3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels
Activities
Use stretch a sentence activities to avoid long reading stories, this will teach students the basic idea of writing, and lead them to write a more and more wonderful story.
Storyboarding
Using Pictures to Teach Words: Come up with three “big ideas”, and put one on each post-it. Fill in the details. Pull out the small post-its, ask students to write one detail on each post-it, and then stick it in the section where it best fits. Try for at least three details in every section.
Assessments
Use Think-Pair-Share to check students' understanding of how to stretch a sentence, then use Fist to five on their storyboarding activity.
2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Activities
Use build a story strategy, in this strategy students are able to see the pictures, which will help their comprehension
Give students a sentence builder bundle, there are three levels of sentence, have students practice on it, and improve their ability to make a sentence.
Assessments
Use thumbs up/side/down to quickly check students' understanding of sentence builder bundle, and use exit tickets to find out how much they learned about build a story.
