Mekong River Dleta
What is a Delta and how is it formed?
It is a landform created at the lower course of a river by deposition.
Erosion occurs in the upper and middle course, this sediment is transported downwards towards the mouth of the river.
As the water exits the mouth of the river and enters the sea, the current slows down and the river loses energy, therefore the sediments get deposited.
As sediments build up at the mouth of the river, it eventually builds up and creates small areas of land that increase in size over time.
The river then finds new paths to the sea through smaller rivers through the built up land that are called distributaries.
