Cher Horowitz from Clueless Mindmap 4 Chapters 9 and 10

Section 9.1
Altruism: When someone performs an action to help someone else, which does not directly reward that person for doing so.
Cher felt bad that Tai was grieving over Elton and wanted to find her someone else to get her mind off of it. This really did not benefit Cher and she was not expecting anything in return, she just wanted to help her friend.
Reciprocal altruism: This is when you help someone and know they will also help you in the future when you need it.
This reciprocal altruism was shown when Travis donated goods to the Pismo Beach Disaster Relief that Cher was helping to run so then Cher went to support him at his skating competition.

Section 9.2
Empathy: The response where we understand someone's distress and can experience events in the way that person does.
Cher felt bad that Tai was very upset about losing Elton and wanted to help her. She even felt bad when Elton claimed that he liked her instead of Tai since she really wanted that relationship to happen so she could understand why Tai was upset.
When we are in positive mood we may be more likely to help others. And when we want to relieve negative emotions, like guilt, it will also increase how much we help.
When Cher wanted to help Tai she was definitely feeling pretty good and upbeat which was probably why she was so willing to help her.
Personal distress: This is when we have negative emotions that most likely occur when we see another person suffering.
Cher felt bad that her teachers Ms. Geist and Mr. Hall were lonely so she set them up together by sending anonymous letters between the two and pretending they were from the other teacher.
Section 9.3
Pluralistic ignorance: When we believe other people have information we don't have so we base our own judgements on what we think those people are thinking.
When Murray claims that Christian is gay and that is why he did not want to have sex with Cher, both Cher and Dionne are quick to believe him. They based their thoughts about Christian on what Murray had said about him.
Diffusion of responsibility: When we just assume that others will do something so we don't feel the need to act.
When Dionne got on the freeway by accident all Cher did was scream which probably made the situation worse if anything. She just expected Murray to help.
When Tai was held over the rail at the mall by two men, Cher, as well as many other people, did not react much. Christian however quickly ran in to help Tai. Cher just expected the man that was with her or someone else to help in this situation.
Section 9.4
Altruistic or prosocial personality: These are people who are more helpful than others in many situations.
I would say Cher definitely falls into this category since she is very willing to help others. For example, when she wanted to give Tai a makeover, Dionne didn't really care to, but Cher felt bad that Tai was all alone and noticed she needed someone to befriend her. She willingly decided to help her.
Cher decided to help Ms. Geist in the Pismo Beach Disaster Relief even though no one else in her class wanted to.
Dependency-oriented help (when the helped solves the problem without letting the individual accomplish anything on their own) vs. Autonomy-oriented help (the helper provides information or guidance to the individual so they can help themselves)
I think Cher uses dependency-oriented help when she keeps helping Tai without really letting her make any decisions. She decided how she should dress and which boy to date, without really listening to Tai's input. This is probably why Tai lashed out at Cher towards the end because she didn't really want Cher to help her anymore.
Section 10.2
-
Displaced aggression: This is when negative emotions that are caused from someone trigger us to act aggressive towards someone else.

Section 10.3
Violence in the Media
Cher has a speech on Violence in the Media, and she claims that even if we took out violence from shows that use it for entertainment, you would still be able to see violence on the news. So she claims it is basically pointless to take it out of shows due to the news.
