Risk for Unstable Blood Glucose
Interventions
Assess blood glucose levels before meals and at bedtime
Assess for signs of hyperglycemia
Assess the patient's current knowledge and understanding about the prescribed diet
Teach patient how to perform home glucose monitoring
Goal
Patient has a blood glucose reading of less than 180 mg/dL
Hemoglobin A1C level less than 7
Deficient Knowledge
Goal
Before discharge, patient will demonstrate knowledge of insulin injection, symptoms and treatment of hypoglycemia and diet.
Patient will keep blood glucose WDL for duration of pregnancy.
Interventions
Verify that the patient understands and demonstrates the technique and timing of home monitoring
Teach patient to follow a diet that is low in simple sugars, low in fat, and high in fiber and whole grains.
Teach patient signs/symptoms of hypoglycemia: anxiety, tremors, slurred speech.
Teach patient to treat hypoglycemia with crackers, snack or glucagon injection.
