sub-atomic particles

neutrons
-
-
-
atoms with the same number of protons but differnent amount of neutrons are called isotopes e.g. C12 and C13
the uncharged neutrons make no difference to chemical properties but do affect physical properties such as melting point and density
-
the atom of an element contain an equal number of protons and electrons meaning they have no overall electric charge
Light
law of reflection
the angle to the normal that the incident ray approaches the mirror will be the same as the angle to the normal that the reflected ray leaves the mirror

waves
magnetic waves
must move through a medium, cannot travel though a vacum like space

Heat transfer
As you heat a substance, the heat energy is transferred to the particles in the substance as kinetic energy.
convection
warmer regions of a fluid are less dense than colder regions of the same fluid- warmer regions rise and colder regions sink, this flow is called a convection current. ---- occurs in gases and liquids.
radiation
heat can travel through infrared waves, these are electromagnetic waves, e.g. there are no particles between the Sun and the Earth, so the heat cannot travel by conduction or by convection.
conduction
particles that are close tongether transfer energy through direct contact as they vibrate ----- occurs in solids
