Gas Chambers
They used Zyklon B, which killed in minutes.
A Nazi had to stand outside of the gas chamber until it was silent.
They were made to look like showers, which tricked the inmates.
More than 2 million people died in gas chambers.
Gas chambers were used to kill dozens at a time.
Labor Camps
Most Auschwitz prisoners worked in a synthetic rubber plant.
Many inmates were forced to work in industrial plants.
If you were not being productive while in the labor camps, you were shot.
Being able to work in the labor camps saved many lives.
Many of the inmates had to build railroads.
Three Sections
Auschwitz II contained several gas chambers.
Auschwitz III was a labor camp with many subcamps.
Auschwitz II was a concentration and extermination camp.
Auschwitz I was the main part of the camp.
Auschwitz III created a labor factory for Conglomerate IG Farben.
Washrooms
There was typically one washroom per building.
Washrooms had little running water.
Some buildings didn't even have a washroom in them.
Some had a bucket for hundreds of inmates to use.
Many diseases were contracted in washrooms due to filth.
Main Gate
Many said their goodbyes to Jewish neighbors at the gate.
They made the camp's entrance be through the railroad system so they could easily deposit inmates.
Aryans would stand on top of the bridge and watch the Jews
The main gate was also used to deliver supplies.
This was a bridge over a railroad track that went through the camp.
